SPECIAL SPEAKER AT THIS WEDNESDAY'S
SOLIDARITY ECONOMY CLASS!

Wednesday 2/29 7 PM in Seminar Room 4 of Loyola University's Monroe Library

Van Temple, Executive Director of the Crescent City Community Land Trust, will speak on the topic of “Community Land Trusts." A Louisiana native, Van Temple was the long-time director of Delaware’s Diamond State Community Land Trust, the nation’s first statewide land trust. He will show the 38-minute video, “Homes & Hands: Community Land Trusts,” which presents the basics of CLT housing through firsthand stories of families and individuals from around the country. This will be followed by a slide show and presentation on the work of the newly-formed Crescent City CLT, and a discussion of the potential for CLT’s locally.

This event is co-sponsored by the OccupyNOLA Solidarity Economy Committee and the ZigZag Discussion Group at Loyola. For further information, please contact John Clark at clark@loyno.edu.

THE ALMOST FREE CALENDAR HAS ARRIVED!!!

We at the New Orleans Free School Network know that there are some great classes/educational opportunities around the city that, while they are not free, are relatively cheap and/or ask for sliding scale fees or donations.

So we have created the "Almost Free" calendar, a calendar that promotes these classes/events. The classes on this calendar fall into 3 categories: 1) they have a fixed fee of $10 or less; 2) they ask for a sliding scale fee, with the low end always $10 or less; or 3) they operate on a donation basis. Check the details of each class/event for more information.

This calendar will exist ONLINE ONLY, so don't forget to check out the link on our "Calendar" page.

***Also, just a general reminder that some classes may be cancelled/postponed due to Mardi Gras. Check with teachers!***

Teachers Needed for NOPL's Teen Tech Week!

Hey there tech-savvy Free Schoolers!

The New Orleans Public Library is looking for volunteers to talk to teens about information security on the web as part of their Teen Tech Week. If you are interested in talking to youth about what happens to the information they share online and how they can be more secure, shoot us an email.  You don't have to be an expert, you just need a little information and a willingness to help teens protect themselves online.

Let us know ASAP as the event will take place between March 4 - March 10th.

Some new additions to our website, class updates, class proposal reminder, and weekly meeting location change....

*CLASS PROPOSALS for the March semester are due on Wednesday, February 15th! If you have a class in mind, but you feel as though 2 weeks isn't enough time to prepare for it, PROPOSE EARLY! It is totally OK to propose a class for future months. This will give you more time to prepare your syllabus, find a location, and encourage students, and it will give us more time to help you with these tasks!

*"Fluxus 2012: "Performance Art" Apocalypse" has a location! 2/10, 2/11, and 2/12 the class will be held at the Marigny Opera House @ 725 St. Ferdinand. 2/13, 2/14, and 2/15 the class will be held at the Mudlark Public Theatre @ 1200 Port Street.

*NEWLY ADDED CLASS: "Beginner's Geneaology Workshop" on Saturday 2/25 from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM at the Main Library Auditorium @ 219 Loyola Ave. You must call 504-596-2597 to register in advance, as class is limited to 50 participants. An "Advanced Geneaology Workshop" will take place on Saturday 3/3, same time, same place, same phone # to register. See our "Current Classes" page for more details.

*Check out our new "Volunteer" page! This page will provide you with lots of information on how you can volunteer with the New Orleans Free School Network, including opportunities to help us put up flyers and table at markets, among other ways you can donate your time. Don't forget that you can also donate your $! All money donated to NOFSN goes directly into the collective, helping us print flyers and obtain materials for classes.

*Check out the map on the "Propose a class" page! This map includes past, current, and potential class locations around the city to help you find out where classes are being held near you, as well to inspire ideas about where you could host your Free School class.

*Our weekly organization meetings have changed location! We will still meet every Tuesday for 10:00 AM, but now we will be meeting upstairs at Fair Grinds Coffee House (3133 Ponce de Leon).
