The New Orleans Free School Network will be tabling (handing out information, answering questions, talking face-to-face with you) at 2 places tomorrow (Sunday 4/22)!


*The Really Really Free Market  at the Tree House (1614 Esplanade @ Claiborne) from noon-darkish. Bring your old stuff that you don't to look at anymore, and take away some great finds that you never knew you needed. It's just like a flea market, but everything is free. Live music by Sweet Street Symphony! And, of course, we will be there to talk to you about the Free School! 


*noladiy.org's Punk Rock Takeover at the Big Top (1638 Clio near Lee Circle) from 2-6pm. Small Bones, Reagabomb, and Mea Culpa will be performing at this all-ages show. The show costs $5 but the door price drops to $3 with book donations for the Iron Rail Infoshop or Books 2 Prisoners, or with non-perishable food donations to help offset our food costs and to be donated to local outreach programs. All of the proceeds from these shows will be funneled into local nonprofit organizations, including NOLA Free School Network!

UNDERSTANDING WALL STREET OCCUPATION: A Keynote Address by Jeff Goodwin

7:00 PM, Nunemaker Hall, Loyola University

Jeff Goodwin, Sociology Professor at NYU and participant-observer in Occupy Wall Street, is a specialist in social movements, revolution, and terrorism. His books include "No Other Way Out: States and Revolutionary Movements", "The Social Movements Reader", and "Rethinking Social Movements".  He is the keynote speaker for this year’s Student Peace Conference at Loyola. This talk will be very timely, as we witness the resurgence of the Occupy Movement this Spring and consider its possibilities for the future.

Watch for a minute or stay all day. There will also be great resources to help you get more "green" in your life. Free and open to all ages.

The New Orleans Community Bike Project & Bike Easy present: GET BACK ON THE SADDLE - Bicycle Commuter Workshop for Ladies & Trans Only!
This Friday 4/20 from 6-8pm at Plan B (1024 Elysian Fields Ave), dust off that old bike, or walk up to see how you can incorporate bicycle riding into your everyday life. Through hands-on activities, we’ll answer the questions: “How can I ride most safely in New Orleans?”  “What is the right bike for me?” Rotate through 3 stations to help you choose the right bike, ride safely, and gain confidence. Experts at the workshop will discuss different kinds of bikes, local bike mechanics can help with basic repairs (lube chains, tighten bolts, fix flats), and bicycle instructors will teach you how to ride safely on our streets and ride with confidence.
Note: This workshop is for Ladies and Trans ONLY!

Our next computer workshop, "How to Book Travel Online - and Save!" is next Wednesday, April 18, at 1 pm at the Freret Neighborhood Center. These days it is almost necessary to book travel online, but it can be an overwhelming process! Come to this workshop for some handy tips and tricks for saving money when booking travel, as well as some recommended websites to check for the lowest fares.

  

The next Ask an Expert workshop, "Ask A Lawyer: Wage Theft Prevention" is Saturday, April 21, 12 pm - 2 pm. Have you ever not been paid by an employer? Come to this workshop to learn what your workplace rights are, as well as how to gather evidence, how to keep a record of your work, and how to recover your money! This workshop will be facilitated by the Workplace Justice Project/Wage Claim Clinic at Loyola University. Habrá interpretación al español.

We also have another upcoming workshop, "Navigating the Charter School System," on Saturday, April 28, at 12 pm at the Center. We will be joined by Takema Robinson of the New Orleans Parent Organizing Network, who will be able to answer all your questions about how education works in New Orleans today. This workshop is great for parents and non-parents who are curious about the new system!

You don't have to be an expert....teach a class on a topic you've always wanted to learn more about! Teaching is one of the best ways to learn.
